Not Sure About Drug Rehab?

Is OxyContin Addictive?

In short; yes.

OxyContin is extremely addictive. Obviously, there is a lot more to be said about how and why it is so addictive. OxyContin addiction has risen drastically in the past decade, and unless drastic steps are taken, a new generation of Oxy addicts will be entering the adult world facing not only the problems average people face, but many more. Following are facts about OxyContin addiction in Canada and the United States.

Facts About Oxy Addiction

Addiction to Oxycontin, according to the Drug Policy Alliance, is rare if used as prescribed. They also claim that only a “small number” of people become addicted to OxyContin. Oddly, every other study, research team, and government findings show that it is highly addictive. Even MTV, in a news story dating back to July of 2003, called the drug a “synthetic morphine” and “a killer”.

Difference between OxyContin and OxyCodone

It is important to make a distinction as to OxyContin and OxyCodone. OxyCodone is a drug found in prescription drugs such as Percocet, which is combined with Tylenol or Ibuprophen. Combination prescription drugs contain a lower amount of the OxyCodone and are less powerful. OxyContin, however, is straight OxyCodone and is a much higher dosage of the drug.

Why is OxyContin so Abused?

Once people discover the euphoric effects of Oxy, they quickly learn that the time release feature of the pill can be avoided by chewing or crushing it. Many then snort it, or mix it with a liquid to inject it. This is done to increase the “good feelings” that often accompany an Oxy high. It is compared to Heroin, in both effects and withdrawal symptoms and has been dubbed “Hillbilly Heroin.” Oxy is an opioid, just as are morphine and codeine.

US Recall News speculated that in the future, historians will refer to the time after the year 2000 as the “opium epidemic of the 21st Century,” due to Oxycontin and its addictive qualities. Throughout history, the derivatives of opium have caused major problems, but since the media, as well as social media, were not present, it was not as well documented. In fact, during the civil war, opium was considered a wonder drug. The 400,000 resulting addicts were said to have “the soldier’s disease.”

OxyContin is addictive, as history has proven. With enough investigation, problems caused by opium, which ultimately resulted in OxyContin, were evident even in ancient china. Oxy is a narcotic, an opioid, and in short; a very dangerous drug. There is no question that OxyContin is addictive.

How to Get Off OxyContin?

There are some people who are addicted to Oxycontin who, despite statistics to the contrary, believe they can get off this drug alone. The truth is, some do. Sadly, while many attempt it, few succeed. Still, it is admirable that they are at least attempting to put a stop to Oxy addiction. One of the reasons the Narconon drug rehab program works so well is it uses a combination of methods together in order to increase the rates of success. Stopping an Oxy addiction involves the mind, body and spirit.

Quitting Alone or in Rehab?

There is an interesting thread on a site called The Answer Bag. Many of those who responded to the question “What is the best way to get off Oxycontin” used several methods in order to achieve success. Like smoking, some can quit by going “cold turkey”, while others can wean themselves off. It appears to be that way for those who have been able to stop using Oxy alone. Quitting abruptly is the most efficient way to do this, but it will cause more severe withdrawal symptoms, and should be done with the help of withdrawal specialists. There are staffs especially trained just for that at a Narconon rehab Center.

Attending some sort of support group is a good idea as well. Support can make all of the difference in the world for someone trying to beat an Oxy addiction. There are support groups throughout the U.S. and Canada which may be helpful. At some point, even those who want to “take care” of their addiction alone find that they do need other people to some extent. This is where support groups help.

Narconon, drug-free Detox and Rehab Program

Despite the best efforts, some do not succeed when trying to get off Oxyconin alone. When that happens, they can either try again, or seek the help of a comprehensive, drug-free rehabilitation program, such as Narconon. Again, it is admirable to try to do it alone, but it certainly does not indicate weakness to need, and get help. Whether someone is still trying to do it alone, or has already decided to get rehab, we have counselors here at Narconon who can answer any questions.

Addiction affects a person physically, mentally and spiritually. Not surprisingly, that is how it is most successfully treated. This is exactly how we do it at Narconon. As part of our detox program we use a unique drug-free method to eliminate the drugs from the system. Then we go on to help people learn why they became addicted and what their triggers are. From there, learning how to live without drugs is the next step. The benefit of our drug rehabilitation center is that it is all available in one place.
